In the wild, Reticulated Hillstream Loaches are endemic to shallow, very fast-flowing, highly-oxygenated streams and rivers. The fish have specialised morphology adapted to life in such fast-moving water: their fins, head and body form a powerful suction cup that allow them to cling tightly to solid surfaces. Their swimming abilities are somewhat reduced as a result, and they instead ‘crawl’ their way over and under rocks.
