When using a timer for the LED, are the last settings saved after shutting the unit off?

Yes. For example, if the white and blue LEDs are on and the power supply is interrupted or shut off, the same white and blue LEDs would come back on when the power is restored.

What live plant species do you recommend for this aquarium?

The LED lighting supplied with this tank is suited for plants requiring low to medium light levels. Anubias, Java Fern, and Cryptocoryne are ideal choices.
