How do I know if my protein skimmer is working properly?

It usually takes about a week for a new skimmer to break in. When adjusting your skimmer, start with the air input at maximum and slowly push the skimmer collection cup down until you see the type of skimmate desired (dark brown to black coloration, and not too watery, is ideal). Be patient and allow for a day or two after each adjustment to evaluate.

Do Fluval Protein Skimmers remove surface film on a freshwater aquarium?

No. A protein skimmer is designed for use in marine aquariums only. Stop the pump and remove the film with a small container or a net. Then apply a filter media with a good organic scavenging resin and high grade carbon, such as Fluval Total Clear. We also recommend installing a Fluval surface skimmer (#A240).

I added Fluval Aqua Plus Water Conditioner to my aquarium after a partial water change. Why has my protein skimmer overflowed?

This is due to the fish-protecting colloids included in Fluval Aqua Plus Water Conditioner. Simply shut off your skimmer for a couple of hours to prevent this from happening in the future.

Following a water change, why did my protein skimmer overflow after applying Aqua Plus Water Conditioner?

It occurred due to the fish-protecting colloids in this product. Simply shut off your skimmer for a couple of hours to prevent this from happening in the future.

How do I prevent baby fish from being pulled into my filter?

Make an incision in the center of a coarse, open cell foam filter block and insert the siphon tube strainer into it. We recommend rinsing the block every 2 weeks to ensure proper filtration performance.

I change the carbon in my filter every couple of weeks. Is this too often?

No. It’s better (and easier) to prevent odors rather than having to remove them once they’ve accumulated. Some fish are messy eaters, or are more prone to producing large amounts of waste, so prevention is key.

What general maintenance tips do you have for this filtration series?

Do you have any tips for fixing common filtration issues?

Aquatic expert Tom Sarac discusses the 6 most common filter problems, while providing helpful troubleshooting tips to resolve them.

I found a fish stuck to the intake of my filter. Is the flow too strong?

You don’t need to be concerned about your filter being too powerful for use with healthy fish, many of whom swim in natural habitats with much stronger currents. If a fish became stuck to the intake of your filter, it’s likely that the fish was already sick. Take note that you can adjust the filter output strength to suit your particular fish species.
