Ammonia is produced when uneaten food and waste decompose. This is highly stressful and toxic to fish if left to accumulate within the aquarium. To know if you have a build up of ammonia, test weekly.
Ammonia Test Kit, 0.0-61. mg/L (50 tests)
Ammonia is produced by fish as they breathe and pass waste into aquarium water. Other sources include decomposing waste from uneaten food and other organic contributors. This is highly stressful and toxic to fish, in particular in new aquariums and if left to accumulate within the aquarium fish loss will occur. To know if you have a build up of ammonia, test weekly to ensure ammonia is detected or more frequently during new aquarium establishment, post medicating, etc.

How often should I dose my tank with this product?
As waste naturally collects in your aquarium everyday, we recommend using this product at least weekly to support better oxygen levels and water quality.
Does using Waste Control Biological Cleaner cause ammonia spikes?
The rapid breakdown of organic waste can indeed cause ammonia levels to increase. It is for this reason that the use of Cycle Biological Enhancer is recommended while dosing Waste Control Biological Cleaner.

Why did my aquarium pH level rise rapidly after changing my gravel?
Some buffering by natural gravel is expected, but it will have a more dramatic effect on tap water with little buffering capacity (KH). At least 30-40mg/L KH temporary hardness is required to stabilize pH levels.
Is the Fluval Ammonia Test kit affected by ammonia binding/locking supplements?
The Fluval Ammonia test kit uses the Indophenol method, which is typically not affected by ammonia binding/locking products. Given that there are many such water supplements on the market today, we cannot guarantee this will always be the case.
“Why did my test kit reading show a different pH value than when I brought a water sample to the store?
It is preferable to bring your water sample and test kit to the store to measure both at the same time. If your container had too much air in it, then it would likely change the pH value. Conditions can also be different between two locations so it’s preferable to measure both kits simultaneously.
