THE TEPU KANA PROJECT | Protecting the Amazon with Aquarium Fish

It’s no secret that large portions of the Amazon rainforest have been lost to illegal gold mining, logging, cattle farming and other human activities. To help offset this alarming trend and ensure the survival of such a precious ecosystem, Fluval Conservation Ambassador Oliver Lucanus has collaborated with Conservation International in their mission to establish a reliable and environmentally responsible economy in Peleloetepu, a small village of 300 tribal people located on the Tapanahony River in southern Suriname.

The main goal of this pilot project is to set up a sustainable ornamental fisheries enterprise, which will generate income for the community and protect a vast area around the village from environmentally destructive practices. Establishing and equipping a facility to house and care for fish responsibly is essential to such an undertaking, and Fluval products – along with a monetary contribution – have been donated to support this effort at every step of the process!
