Aquatics expert Tom Sarac provides an in-depth overview of a feisty, playful species – the Yoyo Loach!

Endemic to the Indus River basin, the Yoyo Loach (Botia almorhae) is hardy and undemanding, and best kept in aquariums with an abundance of structure. Tankmates should be selected carefully: although the species is not aggressive, it can easily intimidate small, timid fish with its large adult size and active, boisterous behaviors. The Yoyo Loach is capable of producing loud clicking noises, which can be heard outside of the aquarium, and specimens sometimes sleep in strange, unusual positions – for example, wedged into décor pieces or even on their sides on the substrate!
