Aquatics expert Tom Sarac provides an in-depth overview of one of the quintessential beginner aquarium fish – the Cherry Barb!

Native to the Kelani and Niwala river basins in Sri Lanka, the Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya) is an undemanding, small species with a peaceful disposition. Best kept in groups of at least 6 to 8, males feature striking red coloration, whereas females are more drab and brown in color. Cherry barbs are not territorial, are compatible with most other small, peaceful fish, and are not reknowned fin nippers like many other barbs!
